The latest version of the rider-tested and approved Lee Cougan hardtail builds on a long tradition of front suspension cross country solutions. Making a fast frame faster in the case of the Rampage, universally praised by almost anyone who has experience driving or racing on it, made it a really difficult task. In a segment where lightweight construction often comes first, Lee Cougan engineers strive to make a lightweight frame that is efficient and durable to stand out from the competition. An extremely race-oriented design made for a frame with little room for compromise and only modifications capable of bringing forth a significant improvement in the riding experience.
The rear triangle receives a similar treatment to the new 2020 Crossfire, adopting the short 428mm chainstay design to keep the bikes snappy, responsive and efficient. The "elbow" design of the sheath has disappeared and in its place the new fixed pin design. By changing the angle of the seat stay and stretching the tube beyond the wheel axis, effectively positioning the wheel within the chain stay, the vertical deflection increases. Add flatter geometry to the seat tubes and seat stays plus tire clearance that allows for tires up to 2.25 "and you've got a front suspension racehorse that begs for tough conditions. The short rear triangle mates. with a steep head tube angle in an effort to create an incredibly responsive and fast cross country racing machine. The 70 ° head tube allows for quick changes of direction thus making the bike more agile and better prepared for technical routes and aggressive racing.
The vertically hoses of the top of the frame mate with stiff and efficient side down tubes and chain stays to ensure immediate response to pedal input and extremely efficient power transfer. The oversized down tube takes on a meticulously thought-out shape that, combined with the oversized bottom bracket area and shorter, stiffer chainstays, creates a structure that can convert even the highest power pedal travel into efficient forward motion. The excruciating attention to detail is evident as every aspect of the entire frame was considered during the complete redesign of Rampage. The overall geometry incorporates a higher lean design to allow even the largest frame size to benefit from a shorter chain stay and its resulting compact geometry. The seatpost collar also incorporates a great deal of new technology as it uses an advanced three-bolt system that makes the seatpost and seat tube a semi-complete unit, delivering a similar feel and performance in an integrated design.
While the new version of Rampage is visibly different, the elements not visible to the naked eye represent perhaps some of the most significant advances. While the new shapes give a visual impact, it's the absence of visible cables that makes this new model a bit disruptive. An oversized steering head as well as a specially designed stem allow the Rampage to pass the cables not only internally with respect to the frame but to hide them from view passing through the stem. Among the first in the MTB world to develop such a system, the Rampage is at the forefront not only in terms of performance but also in terms of design with a clean aesthetic with few rivals on the market.
